Cremation is a very misunderstood option. Many families do not know that you have the option of having formal visitation hours and either a religious or non-religious service with the body present at a church, synagogue mosque or funeral home. Cremation is a mode of disposition. Examples of disposition are earth burial, above ground entombment and cremation.

After the services have been completed to the family’s satisfaction the decedent is taken to the crematory. After the cremation has taken place families have the following options which are to have the cremains buried or placed in a niche at a mausoleum or placed in a urn and taken home. Families also have the option of dividing the cremains and placing them in multiple urns, keepsakes or jewelry items and given to family members.

Please be advised that there are no New York State laws that require you to purchase a urn, urn vault or any other cremation merchandise.
